What is an FCC license and do PEAK PTT Two-Way Radios Need an FCC License?
Licensing can be another concern whenever you’re thinking about radio solutions for your company. It may be a deciding factor when you’re considering getting a push-to-talk two-way radio. While we can’t speak about all PTT two-way radios, we can say that the majority of our radios do not require an FCC license. While some do, we are happy to help you obtain your license when you purchase our radios.
Below, we’ll go over what an FCC license is, and which Peak PTT radios require one.
What is an FCC License?
An FCC license is an official authorization from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that grants an organization permission to operate within a specific frequency, radio band, or type of radio signal. The FCC is responsible for managing and licensing the electromagnetic spectrum for many types of services, including:
- Broadcast radio and television
- Satellite services
- Wireless services
- Public safety
There are several services that the FCC issues licenses for, including AM, FM, LPFM, FM translator, and FM booster radio stations.
Communication devices that may require an FCC license include:
- Two-way radios that operate above 2 watts of power
- Domestic public fixed and mobile radio systems
- Cable television relay services
- Satellite stations
How to Obtain an FCC License
To obtain an FCC license, you must file an application with the FCC. The FCC will provide public notice of the application, and the public will have 30 days to file comments or objections.
You can renew your FCC license up to 90 days before it expires and up to five years after it expires. You can continue to operate while your renewal application is being processed, but you cannot operate if your license expires and you haven’t renewed it. If you don’t renew your license within the five-year grace period, you’ll need to apply for a new license and retake the required exams.
